This week's guild studio feature is for "jstinson" aka Joni. The jewelry showcased in this wonderful jewelry design studio is a combination of traditional Native American techniques with contemporary elements, colors, and materials. Joni, who is Creek and Cherokee, says that each piece that she creates is symbolic and exemplifies her passion for her nation and her art. Btw, the actual name of this studio is "Ghi-Goo-ie-Designs. This was one of her ancestor's names which means "sweet heart". Joni, has quite an accomplished background. She is a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, as well as a Licenced Medical Nutrition Therapist. Joni also teaches beading at Blue Earth Intertribal School of Native American Studies in Omaha, Neveda. She has the distinction of being invited by the United States Department of Interior to participate in their National Park Service's "Artist in Residence" program. WooHoo for you girl! Her wonderful ethnic creations are sold at Pow Wows, Craft Shows, Galleries, and on-line. This is a very busy and accomplished lady, indeed! Featured this week is one of our newest Jewelry Supply Studios, "Craftemall" aka Beata. What a wonderful addition this studio is to our Guild. The jewelry supplies here are definitely "eye candy" for anyone who designs jewelry or anyone who is just addicted to beads (aren't there a few of those kind of people in this guild? This week our guild is featuring one of our newer Jewelry Design Studios, "LorettasBoutique" aka Loretta. This is a fabulous studio showcasing jewelry designs made with many handcrafted beads by Loretta. Loretta has always been interested in art and creating beautiful and fun pieces. She has many skills that she uses to create her beautiful designs. Loretta knits, sews, is a jewelry designer, and she also makes her very own amazing polymer clay pendants and beads. It is ten years now that Loretta has been designing and creating jewelry. Creating polymer clay pendants and beads is a more recent successful endeavor. Loretta finds that creating polymer pendants and beads, that really look like many semi-precious stones, is terribly exciting. Some of the faux semi precious stones that she has created with polymer clay are Ivory and Lapis Lazuli. This week the Ajdjss Guild is featuring one of our newest members, "The Gemmed Giraffe" aka Maria Jenny.

This jewelry design studio is filled with simple, elegant, and classic necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

Maria Jenny loves using gemstone and semi-precious gemstones in her jewelry. The stones are accompanied by porcelain and crystals. The findings that are used are sterling silver, gold filled, and silver plated. Each piece is unique and of high quality craftmanship.

Maria Jenny began her journey in designing and creating her gemstone jewelry pieces when she was looking for a way to repair some of her favorite pieces of jewelry. She researched online ways to replace clasps and to restring beads. Then her mother sent her a couple of necklaces and pieces that she needed fixed. This was just the beginning, she began to research more and more, and found that working with jewelry became a passion.

The philosophy behind "The Gemmed Giraffe" is a coordinated look. Therefore, you will find coordinating necklaces, bracelets, and earrings showcased in this wonderful Ajdjss Guild jewelry design studio.

This week the Ajdjss Guild is featuring "ShadowDogDesigns" aka Catherine.

ShadowDogDesigns is one of our Jewelry Design studios that showcases unique "one of a kind" handmade jewelry for the discriminating woman.
When visiting ShadowDogDesigns you will find designs made with semi-precious beads and stones, polymer clay pieces, sterling silver, Czech glass, Swarovski crystals, lampwork beads, and copper.

Catherine was bitten by the jewelry making bug about 11 years ago and has been selling at shows, home shows, galleries, and on line since then.

Our featured guild studio this week is MKPjewelry aka Kat BM. This is a studio that showcases a number of pieces of jewelry created with a number of jewelry techniques. Kudos to Kat BM for beings such a versatile and skilled artisan.
Kat's handmade designs are wire wrapped, bead woven, strung, and she also makes makes her own dichroic glass pieces.

This week our featured guild studio is "LadyBeadJewelry" aka Rose Elliot.
LadyBeadJewelry is quite a unique studio because it specializes in fabulous and sparkly "barefoot" jewelry. Yep, "barefoot" jewelry made with crystals and pearls--ooo la la!

Ladybeadjewelry will customize a piece that is made to your own personal specifications using the crystals and pearls you want to match your attire.

Rose has been creating "barefoot" jewelry for 10 years now (since 2000) and in 2001 she opened her own website, "Ladybead.com".
In 2004 Rose began creating pieces to dress up your boots too. This was a great idea since you can't go barefoot all the time. :o)

Featured Studio: DesertRubble

The featured studio for this week is "Desert Rubble" aka Lyn. This is by far one of the most unique and interesting studios in our guild. The creations showcased here are far from the ordinary and just absolutely fabulous.

Lyn creates with polymer clay however her creations are definitely not your usual polymer clay creations. I have to admit that I am in tremendous awe of her skill with clay.

She creates pieces that are in the steampunk, gothic, and industrial genres that have become extremely popular. Actually Lyn refers to her style of as "Industrial Surrealism"--whoa!!!---that's certainly a mouthful.

Come to visit "Desert Rubble" and you will find pendants that are dragonflies, eyeballs, wings, hearts, gears, butterflies and a whole lot of other very interesting things made with polymer clay.

Lyn is a self taught obsessive crafter--I guess that's why she is such a good fit with the members of our guild. :o)

She has done everything from cross stitch and crochet to scroll sawing, designing and making painted wood crafts, to all manner of concrete crafts.

Lyn says that she still loves her scroll saw but polymer clay is definitely her current obsession. She also says that she knows that she will be continuing to evolve as an artisan. So I guess what we see now is not all that we are going to see "coming from her".

I guess this is a good time to see what makes "Desert Rubble" far from the ordinary and just absolutely fabulous:

This week the featured studio is "PickleValentineVintageBeads" aka Libby.
This is a studio that is filled with the most fabulous and lovely vintage beads. I am very partial to vintage beads myself so visiting "PickleValentineVintageBeads" is quite a treat and a pleasure for me. I find that when I am in this studio I am just about drooling from all the fabulous beads.

'PickleValentineVintageBeads' specializes in vintage glass beads for jewelry making and also for jewelry restoration. However, you will also find cabochons, buttons, findings, and other wonderful finds here too.

Libby admits to being a bead junkie for most of her life. She has haunted garage sales, thrifts, estate sales, auctions, swap meets, LBS in every town, church rummage sales...you name it. Libby says that she knows the pain and joy of paying more than she ever intended and eating eggs and tofu for one week straight. I guess you can say that she is as close to being a bead harlot as one can get.

Btw, when you visit this studio you really have to read the bio information. Libby talks about some interesting things about vintage beads and you will probably have a new feeling about them.

The featured studio of the week after a long hiatus is Pinkymonkey aka Maki.Let me say at the onset that this is certainly a fabulous studio. If you like Swarovski crystals (and who in their right mind doesn't?) then this is a studio in which you will want to spend a lot of time in. You will be pleasantly delighted by all the sparkly bling showcased here.

Maki is dedicated to using only the finest quality materials in each and every one of her designs.

She loves to use chic fabrics, sterling silver, antiqued silver, and of course the one and only Swarovski crystals.

This week the Ajdjss Guild is featuring the many beautiful earrings made by the Jewelry Designers and the fabulous earring components showcased in our Jewelry Supply Studios.
Baubles, bangles and beads have been adorning human earlobes as earrings for as long as five centuries.

Pierced earrings first made their debut in the Middle East as early as 3,000 B.C. and were intended to provide strangers with a quick and easy clue as to the wearer's religious, political or tribal identity. Earrings were also an indicator of the individual's social status in the community and were worn as a matter of choice and pride by those who were in power and as a label of inferiority and shame by those who were enslaved. Originally crafted of metals that could be bent, flattened and twisted into unique designs and hoops, earrings became more elaborate in the second century A.D. when assorted gems were introduced. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the fad of fancy ear bobs that had caught on with society's elite was pushed aside in the excitement of gigantic hats, towering wigs and high collars--a combination that would either completely obscure any ornamentation dangling from one's earlobes or cause it to get tangled in fabric and voluminous locks of hair. With the transition in necklines and more subdued hairstyles at the seventeenth century Italian courts, earrings were once more back in vogue and part of a well-heeled lady's bragging rights that her husband could keep her in frivolous luxury. A century later, however, earrings went back into hiding with the advent of bonnets that framed the face and hugged both sides of the head with wide sashes. With the arrival of 1900, elegant hair piled on top of the head or brushed back into a sleek chignon not only delighted jewelers once more but also led to the subsequent invention of clip-on earrings that were considered more sanitary. The rise of both the movie and the modeling industries put the allure of the earring on its biggest platform ever, with women of all ages wanting to emulate the fashion sense of film stars and cover girls who clearly knew how to accessorize. As for men, the option of wearing an earring dates back prior to Biblical times and, in later centuries, came to be associated with rogues such as pirates and explorers.

The wearing of earrings today is primarily ornamental and helps to "tie an outfit together" by using colors that match or contrast with the overall ensemble. The metals, primarily gold or silver, are complementary to the necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches and pins the wearer selects as accessories. Earrings are also an expression of one's personal taste in art and can be made out of wood, plastic, feathers, ceramics, rubber, shells and even food such as pasta, dried beans and various seeds. Earrings can even make a political, religious or social statement by representing campaign propoganda, crosses, or "ribbons" in support of causes such as U.S. troops, breast cancer awareness or empathy for victims of AIDS.

Our featured studio this week is "Jewelled Trellis" aka Robin. The mission statement for this fabulous studio is "that everyone deserves to be jewelled". "Jewelled Trellis" specializes in gemstone and vintage glass jewerly inspired by history and made for the woman of today.

Robin began her work as a jewelry designer when she wanted a special piece of jewelry with a certain look and she just couldn't find it. Because she was unsuccessful in this endeavor she decided to design the piece herself, and so the journey began.

Robin loves to design perfume bottle pendants made of vintage glass to my own period reproductions to stunning semi-precious stone collections.

When you visit "Jewelled Trellis" it is quite apparent that Robin is inspired by vintage designs. She admits that she has gotten inspiration from some of the greatest woman in history like Catherine the Great, Elizabeth the First, Cleopatra, and Isabela of Spain.

Btw, Robin is a wife and mother of 5 children. Her 3 daughters have been wonderful in sharing their own ideas about jewelry designs and her 2 sons have been helpful with wrapping up the pieces that have been sold. It's so nice to hear that "Jewelled Trellis" is actually a family affair.

A bead is a small, decorative object that is usually pierced for threading or stringing. Beads range in size from under 1 millimetre (0.039 in) to over 1 centimetre (0.39 in) in diameter. Beads can be woven together with specialized thread, strung onto thread or soft, flexible wire, or adhered to a surface (e.g. fabric, clay).

Beads have been around for as long as anyone can remember, with the first beads ever made dating back at far as 100,00 years ago. Beads were even used as a type of currency at one point in our history. Since that time, beads have progressed into an entire culture all their own, with many people creating their own beads out of various materials, selling them, or creating jewelry with them.

Beads have had very important meanings for many societies in the past. Some believed that beads brought great fortune and wisdom to those who wore them. Some were used as prayer beads, or as we more often refer to them, rosary beads, to help people recite their prayers in the order they are supposed to be said. Many believed that beads offered protection from evil, and carried them around to stay safe.

Through history, beads have been crafted from various different types of materials. The first beads were made from stones and pebbles, shells, and teeth. Later materials that were used to create beads include clay and glass. To this day, most of our modern beads are still made from clay and glass materials. However, some of the other materials that are also used today to make beads are plastic, acrylic, lucite, fabric, natural gem stones, metals, shells and even paper.

The way we make beads now has not drastically changed since the first beads were made, and most of the materials used throughout history are still the exact same materials we use today. While we have advanced the tools and methods we use to make our modern day beads, they are still reminiscent of the originals methods and tools that were used thousands of years ago. The end result of our work today on beads closely resembles historical beads, as well.

Now, we don’t necessarily believe that beads have any special sort of powers as our ancestors believed. But they do have the power to make us feel stylish when we wear them. We do still use beads in similar ways to create beautiful pieces of jewelry, for religious reasons, and for many other decorative purposes. Though our designs may be a little more bold and intricate, there are a vast amount of similarities between our beads and beads throughout history. Modern technology may have changed the way we do many things, but the art and culture of bead making will probably always stay true to its roots, even as the technology we used in our bead making continues to advance.

Barb has been working with glass for the past 4 years creating her fabulous lampwork beads in her own home studio in Michigan.

Barb prefers to use Effetre and other soft glasses for her lovely creations. Each of her lampwork beads are kiln annealed for strength and durability.

Our guild featured studio this week is "Kottage Kreations" aka Laurie. Laurie is a fairly new jewelry artist yet, after browsing through her studio it is a bit difficult to believe this. Her designs are really quite lovely and it sure seems like she has been designing for ever.

Kottage Kreations is filled with unique one of a kind pieces that are lovingly made from gemstones, Swarovski crystals, pearls, shell beads, glass beads, and ceramic beads. Laurie loves finding new beads and charms in different colors to design with.

Most of the time Laurie's inspiration comes from just taking out some beads and playing around with them. Yep, I sure do relate to this myself and am so sure that many of you do too.

Her inspiration also comes from the beauty of nature, magazines, and catalogues too.

There have been many nights that Laurie will wake up in the middle of the night with some great design that she is anxious to make.

Laurie is an eclectic jewelry designer who loves to create different styles of jewelry.

She is very proud of her creativity and is constantly growing and evolving as a jewelry artist.

This week we are featuring "Willow Walker Designs" also known as Pamela. This is a Ajdjss guild studio that is filled with "Mystical Treasures", lovely and uniquely designed jewelry that combines color, glass, wire, and sparkly stuff.

Pamela the Jewelry Artisan and owner of "Willow Walker Designs" is proud of being a 2nd generation glass artist and teacher who actually began working with stained glass at only 8 years old. Amazing!!!
Pamela admits to always being fascinated with colorful, shiny, and sparkly things and this fascination seemed to naturally lead to her creating beautiful and unique dichroic fused glass jewelry.

Pamela loves to use wire to set her handcrafted glass pieces. She feels that the more she explores wire wrapping as an art medium the more she is fascinated with it and it's endless possibilities.

When you visit "Willow Walker Designs" it is almost impossible not to immediately be in awe of all the fabulous handicrafted pieces showcased there. The colors are beautiful and they sparkle brilliantly at you.

Our featured studio of the week is "Vintage Findings and More" aka Linda.

"Vintage Findings and More" has the distinction of being one of two of the only supply shops in the Ajdjss Guild that showcases vintage and vintage style findings, beads, cameos, settings, pendants, filigrees, stampings, and charms.

I must admit that I just love browsing through this studio so very much because recently I have found myself in "a vintage state of mind". And not because I am 6 decades old.

What fun it is to look at some of the lovely, romantic, and charming jewelry supplies for creating vintage inspired jewelry.

Hey, that 's not all that is found in this wonderful studio. There are also some beautiful beads and even gemstones to discover here. So you really don't have to be in "a vintage state of mind" to shop here.

Linda, who has been a hairdresser for 30 years has been creating jewelry for about 4 years now. She says that she is very fortunate to be able to do all the creative things that she loves. And, she admits that she really loves hunting for beautiful beads and findings, being able to create with them, and being able to share them with other jewelry creators to use for their own masterpieces.

This week the Ajdjss Guild is pleased to feature "Ctbydonna" or "Creative Treasures" aka Donna.
This is a studio with designs that have a little romance, femininity, and rustic charm about them.
Donna is a true artisan. She is both a jewelry designer and a metal smith.
Ten years ago she began making jewelry as a hobby and as a strategy for stress relief. Donna says, " My day job can be very stressful at times, and pounding on a piece of wire in the evening seems to make things better".
(I'm so glad to hear that she's not pounding on her head :o) LOL ).

Anyway, after a time making jewelry became more than a hobby for her, it actually became a passion--as many us well know.
Some of Donna's favorite materials for her creations are wire ( sterling silver and copper), gemstones, crystals, and all kinds of beads.
This jewelry artisan really loves what she does and has a strong desire to create "exquisite pieces" that can be worn and enjoyed for a lifetime. Donna's strong creating spirit comes straight from of her heart.
Donna comes from the beautiful state of Arizona where the beautiful Rockie Mountains, Grand Canyon, and desert are strong influences for her south western designs.

Featured this Week: Turquoise-- A Sacred Gemstone

Turquoise has been a "prized" stone for many years. It was used to make jewelry by the Egyptians and it was "honored" by the Native American Indians.

The colors of turquoise range from blue to green. The more copper in the stone the bluer it is and the more iron in the stone the greener it is.

It's name means "Turkish Stone" as it came to Europe by way of Turkey.

Turquoise is found all over the world in places where volcanic activity has occurred. It is found here in the US, Mexico, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Tibet.

The turquoise found in Iran is known to be of the highest quality. It was first mined there over 6,000 years ago. However, not much is exported now. Today much of turquoise comes from Mexico, the U.S., and China.

Here is a list of words that has long been associated with turquoise:

Protection, wisdom, energy, serenity, wholeness, self-expression, creativity, peace of mind, emotional balance, good luck, spiritual grounding, honest communication, friendship, love and loyalty. Absorbs negativity.

These are some of the "Metaphysical Properties" of turquoise:

Protects and blesses the wearer.

Brings wisdom.
Enhances communication. Absorber of negativity.
Excellent grounding stone--it helps us to better understand ourselves bringing emotions and ideas under control.

Strengthens and calms the mind and body.

Excellent healing stone.

The featured studio this week is "Diva Pixie-Fools and Jewels" aka Cindy.
This is a fabulous studio because Cindy uses a full gamet of jewelry making techniques to create her jewelry pieces. You will also find a number of different styles also.
Cindy has been beading since she was 14 years old. Since then she has taught herself a number of jewelry techniques. Her many skills are truly enviable. Just listen to them--she can weave beads on a loom, she can wire wrap, she can string, she makes pendants, beads, and other focals from resin, she can create beads from natural items like flower petals, spices, paper, she can fuse glass, and now she has been exploring the world of polymer clay.
Okay, so now you can understand why I say that she is truly enviable.

Cindy has quite an interesting and busy life. She works as an elementary music teacher, she is involved with the local community theater in Dodge City, Kansas where she lives. Whoa, this is one creative and active lady. I for one can not keep up with her.

Our Featured Studio this week is "CalysJewelryCreations" aka Dawn.
This is a wonderful studio that showcases jewelry with a very strong "ocean and beach" influence.
Of course, there is a reason for this. There once was a time when Dawn had a desire to become a Marine Biologist. But, as we all know life is unpredictable and has many different roads for us to travel down.
The road that Dawn has traveled is the one of the crafter--sounds familiar???
Dawn loves working with her hands. She has enjoyed needle work, photography, creating mosaics, and working with ceramics. However, creating jewelry has been her greatest passion.
She began creating jewelry about 6 years ago and has never regretted not pursuing the career of a Marine Biologist.
How lucky we are that she has traveled down the road of the crafter.
Dawn's jewelry creations are a lovely reflection of her appreciation and love of the beach, ocean, and nature. Her theme for her jewelry is "funky and fun with beach attitude".

Our featured studio this week is "Glass and Wire Gems" aka Donna. "Glass and Wire Gems" is the perfect name for this Artfire Studio. It is filled with wonderful handcrafted lampwork and dichroic glass and also wire wrapped pieces.
Donna has been creating with glass for quite a number of years.
Originally she dabbled with making stain glass. However, in 2007 a friend "introduced" her to the process of fused art glass and wire wrapping and she was hooked. Donna finds great joy in cutting and shaping glass pieces and then placing them in her kiln. She gets a real "kick" out of the beautiful results. Sometimes she likes to embellish her pieces by wire wrapping.
At first Donna made pieces for family and friends as gifts. But she was strongly encouraged to actually sell her work to others.
So, now she has her handcrafted pieces on consignment in local shops and she opened "Glass and Wire Gems" on Artfire.
It is said that a true jewelry artisan is one that actually makes the pieces used for the creation of jewelry---So, Donna is a true Jewelry Artisan.

This week the Ajdjss guild is featuring "AllEarringsandSupplies" aka Toni.

This is quite a unique studio filled with all sorts of beads from glass, crystals, semi precious stones, shells, lucite, fresh water pearls and more. There are cameos here as well, and some cabochons plus, all sorts of jewelry findings made of silver, copper, and brass. Now that's alot of stuff to offer for sale BUT that's not all. This fully stocked fabulous studio also showcases wire, chain, and those great roped chords for dangling pendants off of and there's a section with pendants too.

And last, but certainly not least, "AllEarringsandSupplies" has 9 full pages of Toni's wonderful handcrafted jewelry. You will find earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more that are created by Toni using a number of different jewelry techniques.

"AllEarringsandSupplies" is a totally awesome studio with a totally awesome selection of beads and supplies not too mention totally awesome jewelry.

Here's a little personal stuff about Toni. She lives with her husband in Maine on top of a mountain. Toni says the seasons are quite beautiful there however, the winter's a bit harsh. It was during one of those harsh winters that Toni's crafting interests turned to jewelry design and creation. She was hooked with this and began purchasing a phenomenol amount of supplies. Well, with all these supplies she was able to make lots of pieces. After awhile she realized that she had made an awfully big supply of jewelry and she had accumulated enough supplies for a few life times. Her husband suggested that she try to sell some of her pieces and that led to selling some of her accumulated jewelry supply stock too. Surprisingly enough her little business took off and she found her way to us. How lucky are we???

The Ajdjss Guild Features the Sparkle and Shine of Swarovski Crystal Beads and Accessories

Swarovski Crytals are sparkly, beautiful, and probably one of the most lovely creations of man. Each crystal bead or component is made in a factory with the same basic formula that was perfected by Daniel Swarovski, an expert at glass cutting, in the beginning of the 20th century.

Swarovski Crystal is referred to as "silver" crystal, however, there is no silver used in it's creation. The crystal got this name from a Swarovski craftsman in Austria, who held up a finished piece of crystal to the light for inspections and was awed by the silvery glow created by the object's spectral brilliance. Since then, all pieces in the collection have been called Swarovksi Silver Crystal.

So, what is Swarovski Silver Crystal made of?

Swarovski Crystal is fired using a combination of natural minerals and quartz sand, and then cooled slowly to avoid stress and inclusions.

Why is Crystal more expensive than glass?

Crystal quality is dependent on the production method and the processing of the raw material . Both factors play a major role in determining its brilliance and the measure of its value.

What distinguishes Swarovski products from imitations and those made by other manufacturers?

The Ajdjss Guild is "Charmed" This Week

This week the Ajdjss Guild is celebrating the many wonderful charms that are offered in our Jewelry Supply studios, as well as the lovely jewelry designs created with charms showcased in our Jewelry Design studios.

So, what exactly is a charm?

A charm is a small ornament that is often worn on a bracelet, necklace, brooch, or pair of earrings. Charms have been a worn since the early times of human history. In early times an interesting shape or colored stone would be picked up and then carried or worn as a talisman of protection or good luck.

The word charm connotes magical properties. Eventually small carvings out of stone, shell, ivory, or would were created. These trinkets (charms) were an important part of the spiritual world of people.

Over the ages charms have been created out of many different materials and have taken many forms. Charms of precious metals were most likely first made of gold and people adorned themselves with this precious metal. From simple shapes such as stars, hearts or crosses to intricate carvings of animals, shells or flowers, charms have a symbolic meaning for those who wear them.

Today charms are worn to express ourselves or commemorate special occasions and can still evoke strong feelings. Charms can represent our passions, interests and hobbies. Charms make wonderful, personal gifts and last for generations. Charms remind us of special people, places or events. A charm is a cherished gift to give or receive.

Our featured guild studio this week is "SWdesigns" aka Stacey. "SWdesigns" is a studio that showcases a number of different styles of jewelry, each beautiful in on their own way.

Upon visiting "SWdesigns" you will find some classic looking pieces, some whimsical pieces, some funky looking pieces, and even some pieces in a 'Western Motif'. There is definitely a style for every taste in jewelry here.

Not only does one find different styles of jewelry in this wonderful studio but you will see a large variety of materials used as well. Stacey enjoys designing her jewelry with pearls, sparkling crystals, and lovely semi-precious stones.

Stacey has long been an avid crafter. Some of her crafting talents include sewing, crocheting, embroidery, cross stitching, and of course beading.

This great passion has been part of her since she was 18 years old. Our featured guild studio this week is "Andrea T Jewelry" aka Andrea. Before I say anything else I must say this: " I love this cat avatar"!!! And of course, Happy One Year Anniversary here at Artfire. WooHoo!

Okay, now I can go on.

Visiting "AndreaTJewelry" is definitely a pleasant "visual" experience because Andrea has filled her studio with jewelry creations that are not only lovely but also so very feminine looking.

Andrea loves working with gemstones. You will find designs with Amethyst, Adventurine, Labradorite, Tourmaline, Lapis Lazuli, just to name a few. Most

recently Andrea has become "enamored" with Larimar. She loves the colors of this stone and how well it goes with other stones.

As a rule Andrea uses the "rougher" cuts of stones not the "gem-quality" stones because she feels her designs really lend themselves to the "rougher" cuts and let's face it the "gem-quality" stones are definitely a bit pricey.

This weeks Ajdjss featured studio is "LaJewelryDesigns" aka Lea.

LaJewelryDesigns is a studio that is filled with a variety of lovely lampwork beads in different shapes, sizes, and colors.

What is really fabulous is that Lea makes each and every bead by herself. She does this in her own studio in NY.

Lea takes great pride in the quality of her beads. To ensure the strength and longevity of each of her beads she immediately has them annealed in a digitally controlled kiln in her studio. Annealing is quite an important procedure when making lampwork beads because it ensures that the beads will not shatter.

With the start of this new year our guild has been pretty busy:

1. We had a "Valentine's Day" challenge with 4 winners each receiving a bag of vintage beads. 2. We also had a "Lampwork Bead" contest and have 4 winners for this event.

Featured Studio: SilverBirchDesigns

This week's featured Ajdjss Guild studio is "SilverBirchDesigns" aka Elizabeth. Elizabeth has had quite a lot of experience in designing jewelry. Her first attempt was when she was 11 years old when her grandmother gave her some of her "junk" jewelry and asked her to make pretty new things with them. Well, after this she was just plain "hooked".

"SilverBirchDesigns" is filled with many natural materials such as stone, bone, glass, silver, gold, and gold fill. Her interest in designing with many kinds of stones comes from her belief that they have "healing" qualities. She even provides her clients with information about the metaphysical/healing properties of the stones.

The different techniques of beadwork are also of great interest to Elizabeth. She has learned a number of techniques in this genre. She can do the right angle weave, African net, odd count peyote, even count peyote, brick, square and lazy stitches, spiral, tubular peyote, tubular brick, and herringbone. WOW, what an impressive repetoire of beading techniques!

Elizabeth also likes to do use other jewelry techniques in her creations. Among them are wire wrapping, braided stringing, and she likes to work with multiple strands.

Here are some lovely examples of the jewelry for sale in "SilverBirchStudtios":

Elizabeth shares her love of beading by teaching beading classes. She is in the process of putting together a lesson so that she can teach an on line class. How exciting that must be. There were 12 pictures of Valentine items posted on our Guild's guild event blog from 12 different guild studios. We challenged sellers and buyers of artfire to identify the studio that each of the valentine items were listed in.

The guild is currently having a contest on the Artfire Chatterbox "Contests and Promotions" section. We are asking that both artfire sellers and buyers search through the guild studios to post lampwork beads and jewelry made of lampwork beads. We also have asked for the entries for this contest to be promote,on twitter or facebook, the items that they have posted.

Our featured studio of the week is La Bella Luna aka Evelyn. Evelyn is an authentic "Jewelry Artisan" who specializes in creating very lovely handmade silver jewelry. When you visit the "la bella luna" Artfire studio it is very apparent that Evelyn has a genuine love for creating her jewelry and accessories. Because of this genuine love she created "la bella luna" in 2006 to share her lovely handcrafted creations with others.

The name "la bella luna" translated from French is "the beautiful moon''--Evelyn says, "what was once moonlighting is now my favorite full-time occupation". Thus, it is a "fitting" name for her jewerly studio.

Evelyn is a denizen of Connecticut and is a graduate of Paier School of Art located in Hamden, Connecticut. She is a certified jewerly artisan and is a member of several artisan guilds.

I don't know what anyone else thinks--but I am definitely envious of Evelyn's skills and talents. How truly wonderful it must be to be able to design and make your own pieces to create jewelry with! Kudos to you Evelyn your creations "ROCK"!

"PinkCloudsandAngels" aka Peggi. It is also a pleasant and lovely studio filled with a wide variety of fabulous handmade items. There are pieces of jewelry like necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, as well as, watches, eyeglass holders, lanyards, rosary's, and even some men's jewelry. This is definitely a great studio for buying a gift for any special occassion.

Peggi is a true crafter. Among her many talents are knitting and crocheting, taught to her by her grandmother, dollmaking, ceramics, macrame, drawing, and of course jewelry creation. But, like all of us jewelry designers Peggi is quite passionate about creating jewelry and it has been her favorite hobby for years now. In short, she loves making jewelry.

Peggi has quite a bit of integrity when it comes to her work and selling. She gives each piece of jewelry that she creates the same attention to detail no matter what price the piece is. It is her policy to never inflate prices, and you can be assured that each piece is of the highest quality. She takes great pride in her creations so if a customer is not satisfied there will be a full refund given for the return of the item.

Featured Studio: Jewels Out Of Time--PegM

This weeks featured studio is "Jewels Out of Time" aka PegM. This is a studio that is filled with lovely handmade jewelry as well as beads and pendants.
According to Peg the name of her studio came about when she had a booth along with her husband in an antique shop in York, PA. Most of the items in the booth were vintage and Peg thought of them as gems from the past.
So that thought "morfed" into "Jewels Out of Time".

Peg admits to being a "manic bead collector"--Hmmm that surely sounds quite familiar, doesn't it? Peg, you are definitely in good company here at the Ajdjss Guild--LOL!
Since 1996 Peg has been buying beads and making jewelry. So, what started this "manic" behavior? It seems that Peg went to an estate auction and couldn't resist buying 3 one gallon bags--yep, you read it right--3 one gallon bags of vintage glass and crystal necklaces. Oh boy, talk about a lot of beads!
This purchase certainly kept her busy with sorting this "cache". There was jewelry that was intact and there was lots of jewelry in need of repairs. Most of the repairs were badly needed restringing and lengthening. So now Peg had a real mission. She was in need of jewelry supplies and tools for the job and a jewelry book to teach her what she had to do. And that is how this "manic" collecting of beads started.
Peg admits that her home studio "runneth over" with beads. Beads that have been bought in shops and at shows locally and in her travels from Maine to Wyoming.

Well it is a studio that is filled with an lovely array of eclectic handmade designs from the simple to the sublime. This is something that I truly can identify with. Jeanette became interested in Jewelry Design and Creation after finding out that a pair of earrings that she complimented was made by that person's daughter. With the idea that one can actually create their own earrings she began to read up about Jewelry Making.

Her first creation was given as a gift to her mom and her first sale was to her neighbor. So this is how it all began and has been blossoming ever since because like most of us in the Ajdjss Guild--Jeanette is now addicted to creating jewelry of all styles "from the simple to the sublime".

On the personal side Jeanette is a "stay at home mom" with 2 children, 2 dogs, and a very supportive husband. Hey, this surely "warms the cockles" of my heart too. Thank goodness that Jeanette is addicted to jewelry making because it is calming and quite therapuetic and one needs this with 2 kids and 2 dogs.

The featured studio this week is "Bijouxdesignsforyou". This wonderful studio is one-half of the fabulous mother and daughter team of Glenda and April. Their other wonderful studio is "Rouge River Beads" a jewelry supply studio which was featured here in July.

Featured Studio: Ilmare

This week's featured studio is Ilmare aka Sufen. Sufen's studio Ilmare Atelier actually began out of a desire to fuse both art and jewelry into unique and versatile jewelry creations that are wonderful to wear and are also quite affordable.

This lovely studio's name is very significant to Sufen. According to Sufen "Ilmare" means "the sea" in Italian, which brings to mind the lovely shimmering hues of blue and green. "Atelier" means "workshop" in French. When put together, we have "Studio by the Sea, an absolutely lovely and intriging dream that Sufen is working towards. What a lovely name and what a lovely thought.

When you visit Ilmare you just have to be hugely impressed with the lovely colors of gemstones sparkling in each of Sufen's jewelry designs. Each of her creations not only sparkle beautifully but they shout out beautiful feminity.

Here are some of the fabulous creations:

Indeed, there are so many lovely colors and so many different gemstones used in these fabulously feminine creations. Each piece of jewelry is just like "eye candy"and are quite striking.

Sufen has a tremendous amount of pride in her work and the materials that she uses in her creations. She insists on using only very good quality gemstones and prefers to use goldfilled wires and findings. She uses goldfilled materials because she feels they are far ;more tarnish resistent than other metals.

It is evident that Sufen is definitely successful in fusing art and jewelry into unique and versatile jewerly creations. Kudos to you for your integrity and your art.

Btw, since Sufen has become a member of our guild she has proven to be most supportive of the other members. I see her promoting our featured members each week in the artfire forums and posting in our guild forums too. Featured Studio of the Week: Cthings

This weeks featured studio is Cthings aka Cindy. Cthings has the distinction of being a part of the Artfire community for just about a year now. Yes, she is one of Artfire's original pioneers.

Cindy is a jewelry designer who really loves what shes does. She has been designing and creating jewelry for 3 years now and is still going "strong" at it. Designing and creating new pieces of jewelry from the beads and supplies she has on hand is lots of fun for her, as well as, being able to design and create custom pieces for her clients.

To this end she has developed wonderful communication skills with clients. Now this is definitely a very "savy" business woman!

In designing and creating new pieces Cindy uses a variety of jewelry making techniques from stringing to wire wrapping. She likes to work with a variety of beads and supplies. Look carefully and you will see crystals, pearls, semi-precious stones, lampwork beads, and more. For Cindy the saying "variety is the spice of life" holds true!

Here are some examples of her fabulous designs for sale in her studio:

Cindy has been an active participant of the world of arts and crafts since she was a child. She has found that jewelry design and creation is extremely satisfying but she has a stong passion to learn metal smithing. One day she hopes to take some classes so she can actually make her own metal pieces for her designs. Cindy, this sounds like a great future endeavor and here's wishing you lots of good luck.

"Autumn Leaves" Guild Challenge Results

Our "Autumn Leaves" challenge is long over and it is about time to announce the results.

Originally there were 13 fabulous entries, each a wonderful tribute to "Autumn Leaves". The members of the guild voted and the entries were narrowed down to 4. Then the voting went public and after all the votes were tallied the most voted entry that best represented the theme "Autumn Leaves" was:

A Carnelian carved oak leaf pendant gracefully dangles from a lovely necklace of Moss agate ovals, Adventurine and Evergreen rounds, accented by bright copper beads to give you the feeling of Autumn. Matching earrings are included with this set.

Featured Artist of the Week: Beadlady5

Margo, also known as Beadlady5 is a true artist. She is an artist because she designs and makes one of a kind jewelry pieces, but also because she manages a very large guild and at least 4 online shops.
She has a unique style and sense of taste that I and many others can recognize any where on the web. Her eye for color, detail and sense of passion for what she does is visible in every piece she creates.

Not only does she help the guild members with promoting the group, she also helps and listens to us individually. I have to admit that when I first started on artfire I was lost, confused and didn't know what to think or do half the time. She has guided me in selling online but also guided me, as a new jewelry designer. I bet at times her patience was wearing thin with me but she never showed frustration or anger. She showed nothing but passion for wanting to teach and guide me through the process.

I know this blog post doesn't do Beadlady5 justice but I hope at least it helps many understand the passion and care she has for not just her jewelry but helping artists as well.

Featured Studio: Creations With Heart

Our first featured studio in over a month is "Creations With Heart" aka Julie.

When you visit "CreationsWithHeart" you can certainly see that the jewelry for sale has been made by someone who truly enjoys creating each piece from the "heart".

Julie has many different designing styles. She creates classic pieces, southwestern pieces, western pieces, animal themed pieces, and

her own inspirational pieces.

Julie enjoys creating stylish pieces of jewelry using a number of different materials. Some of her favorite materials are semi-precious gemstones, crystals, pewter, and leather.

Julie confesses that she is a "dog mom". She loves animals so very much that it is very important for her to include jewelry designs with this motif. When you visit "Creations
With Heart" you will find an entire section devoted to "Paw Print Jewelry".

Julie must be commended for generously donating a percentage from her sales of "Paw Print Jewelry" to help animals. She honestly gets personal satisfaction in helping our furry friends that need and depend on us.

I have to say that it has been a really wonderful experience having Julie as part of out guild family. She is kind, friendly, upbeat, actively involved, and very supportive of other members of our guild.

The Ajdjss Guild "Autumn Leaves" Challenge Public Vote

The challenge: "Create an item that best represents the theme "Autumn Leaves"--

Well, the challenge was made and our Ajdjss guild members created the their own best representation of "Autumn Leaves".

Fourteen different interpretations of this theme were created. Each a winner on it's own. Congratualstions to each of the 14 artisans for their wonderful entries.

The entries were posted annonymously on our ning site for a guild wide vote and once again this was not an easy endeavor. However, even in angst the vote was made.

The votes were cast, the count was made, and 14 fabulous entries were narrowed down to only 4. Yes, it was not an easy endeavor but we did it.

Now, congratulations are in order for the artisans of the final 4 items.

Featured Studio: ExquisiteStudios

This week it is a real pleasure to be able to feature one of our most versatile guild members-"ExquisiteStudios" aka Emily.

I'd like to say right up front that Emily is one of our most active members. She is always in the forums promoting her fellow guild members. She is there to share her thoughts on our ning site and she is always kind, pleasant, and positive in what she says. Emily, I always enjoy reading your posts. It is really quite nice to have you as part of our guild.

Emily has been crafting from an early age when she didn't even know what crafting was. The bug for crafting really took hold of Emily when she was in High School when she took a floral design class.

From that time on she began to experiment by working with different innovative and creative mediums. It seems that Emily is very adventurous when it comes to crafting because she says, "there's not much that I won't try."

Some of the crafts that she has tried are drawing, jewelry design (stringing and wire wrapping) creating with wire, creating with glass, and creating with grout. Now, I guess you can see why I said that she is one of our most versatile members of the guild.
